Manheim PA Things to Do:
What there is To Do in Manheim PA?
Manheim PA was incorporated in 1838 in the land
tract called Rapho Township. The land was laid out by William Stiegal
in 1762 who built the Manheim Glassworks. The business failed and
it was sold in 1775 and finally closed in 1780. With the completion
of the Reading and Columbia Railroad the train came to town in 1862.
And in 1884 the town's Electric Company began, water pipes were
laid out and a plant was erected in Bomberger's Mill. As of 2000
the town's population was 4,784. The town is filled with historical
references and lots of fun activities.
One of the world's largest auto auctions is the
Manheim Auto Auction that is held in October. It is a subsidiary
of Cox Enterprises who entered into the business in 1945. They are
also one of the largest online and print automotive providers.
For those who want to get out and enjoy the fresh
air there is an 18 hole golf course and a par 3 golf course. They
are best suited for seniors or those who are beginners. Other activities
include museums, river cruises and shopping. The town also offers
a winery and vineyards that host a number of events throughout the
year. There is a flea market and if you like trains you can visit
the town's Historical Society Railroad Museum.
One of the historical treats in the area is the
Heintzelman House. Major General Samuel P. Heintzelman was born
in 1805 and was a veteran of the Mexican and Civil Wars. He died
in 1880 and was buried in Buffalo, NY. The house was made into a
museum by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission in 1962.
The Stiegal Glass Manufactory also has a site you
can visit with an inscription that reads Baron Henry William Stiegal
made glass there. His building was erected in 1763 and torn down
in 1813. The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission erected
the sign at the original site. Manheim PA is filled with historical
sites and lots of activities for the entire family to share.
